Connecting with Employees

In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Scott Morrison discusses Google’s approach to determining why their talented employees are leaving their firm. Google applied a mathematical approach by entering feedback from reviews into equations along with the responses from those employees to determine if behavior could be modeled. Google has 20,000 employees and can therefore use the law of large numbers to accurately predict outcomes across their wide spectrum of employees. We do not have the luxury of using such a mathematical approach to predict the future behaviors of our people. However, we do have the opportunity to sit with them on a regular basis to stay connected. This gives us a sense of how their work and home attitudes affect their performance and can more easily remedy performance problems in the.
